Learn more about their story and the impact they are making on the foster care community.
PART ONE – Getting to Know The Schreiber Family
How long have you been a licensed foster family and how many kiddos have you had in your home? – We have been licensed since 2015. I would say we’ve had between 45 and 50 kids. I don’t know the exact number of how many has come through our home, but between respite care, emergency placements and regular placements it’s somewhere between 45-50 kiddos.
What why did you become licensed? What inspired you to be a foster family? – In 2014, we actually lost four babies total and we knew my health was an issue, actually after my daughter was born my kidneys failed. I had some really scary health issues that basically the doctor said carrying another baby would not be safe for you at all. We knew we wanted to adopt or foster and we actually started the adoption process and the fostering process at the same time. We just figured God would place the kids in our home that need to be on our home and we would be able to adopt them, if they were meant to stay. If not, at least we were provided them a safe place for a period of time.
What is something you wish people knew about foster care? – They’re not just a number. I mean, they’re children. They’re just like our own biological children. They want love and attachment. It’s really, really hard but it’s a blessing. These kids just want attachment and they to be loved and we are just people who can provide them that.
Also…you’re breaking generational curses. You know you’re able to provide enough love and support for these children and their birth families for them to be able to change that cycle. I have contact with all of my biological families and that’s my ministry. It’s not just the kids, but also it’s the extended family. These parents who may not have been in a great place then, but they have their good times and when they’re able to connect, it’s so beautiful.
Any advice for people that are interested in either becoming a foster parent or maybe getting involved in the foster care community? – Just start where you can. Take a meal, love on a foster family, invite them over. If you feel like bringing kids in your home, start with respite care. This way you don’t have to have a full commitment yet, if you’re not quite ready. Personally, I would say just dive all in it because just get messy; beautiful and messy.
